In Ancient Greece

In ancient Greece sweet Sappho turned
Her thoughts to words that breathed and burned,
O temples, lutes, and incense urn'd
In ancient Greece.

Art, learning, grace, and beauty's bliss
Blossomed in the Acropolis,—
But lo, the woman, tender, true,

Who leans to me with lips of dew,
And love immortal in her eyes—
Thank God, I lived not with the wise
In ancient Greece.
