The Artist

When all the flowers were full and fair
When skies were quiet overhead
I took my pen and smiled a smile
Whereat the flying birds dropped dead.

For on my page to heaven blazed
The shameless and tremendous words
My life's one prayer that I wrote down
Amid the blossoms and the birds.

" O Devil ruling Heaven and Earth
I could have made a better hell
Than this, where here and there a tale
By brutal accident goes well. "

" Shorten our torments in blind rage
Be angry with us if we die
Leaving thy dotard wits to fill
The darkness of Eternity.

I smiled for pride and power of song
Like a blind god I closed my eyes
Then saw, I know not why, new words
Written across those sunken skies.

" The blackbird's song: the grasses' scent:
And your strange smile have risen far
To join the choir that praises God
For the first fancy of a star. "
