Ascensus Gratiarum descensus Gratiarum

If ther be any Vertue left that can
Pull Blessinges down, 'tis Gratitude in Man
And to be humbly thankfull that alone
Makes Him true subject for Compassion:
All other Graces as Asistants sitt
Upon the wool-sacks for to farther it
In representing how the Lawe concludes
On Gods rich bounties Our ingratetudes
Soe ther upon impeachment's drawn to showe
Delinquencies and what He guives, we owe:
First then unless dejected care posess
The Hart and Soule for by-past wickednes
And stir up resolutian to become
Hence forth more righteous, ev'n to Martirdome
In vaine it is to hope or yet surmise
The Acceptation of such sacrefise
From Him whose all-discerning-eye doth pierce
The very Center of the Universe
And Knowes before we Think; Let our thoughts flye
To overtake His Providentiall Eye
And we shall strait be conquerd and confess
His Treasures, but our own unworthines
And like the Eagle first such flight beginn
From the Lowe Contemptible Vale of Sinn
Until Confession and Amendment rayse
Our stretcht out Pignions to the Cloudes in praise
And then when all is done that we are able
Stil we must knowe we'r but unproffitable.
