The Awakening — A Prophecy
SCENE — The Desert of Desire
CHARACTERS
The Yearning O — O. W. Bush-Banks
S PIRIT OF Love — Lee Rapoport (The Yearning One approaches — Soliloquy)
Yearning O NE : The gray dawn is breaking, and I must journey onward o'er the trackless waste of shifting sands, surrounded by this dead silence, in search of peace — which to me, seems almost unattainable. I have journeyed thro' many lands, amid confusion and cruel strife, the sound of which still lingers in my-ears. Unbroken shadows cast their endless length o'er all the troubled earth. Waves of unutterable loneliness overwhelm me.
S PIRIT OF Love : (unseen) Mortal! Thou art not alone.
Yearning O NE : Not alone! Can it be that from out this dead stillness, I hear the welcome sound of a voice other than my own? Speak once again, wh'ere thou art!
S PIRIT OF Love : Most gladly will I grant thy earnest request. I am known as the Spirit of Love.
Yearning O NE : And thy mission?
S PIRIT OF Love : To find and enlighten all who are despairing on the Desert of Desire.
Yearning O NE : Can this be true?
S PIRIT OF Love : Aye, it is true indeed, if thou desirest. I will draw near to thee (approaches) . Now canst thou believe?
Yearning O NE : O Spirit of Love, I can no longer deny thy presence, which is so needful in my hour of fear and dismay.
S PIRIT OF Love : What are they fears, and why art thou dismayed?
Yearning O NE : Spirit of Love, I am fearful for myself and all humanity, as we pass th thro' these stark tragedies of Life. I am dismayed, when I behold the horrors of this Age, and I find no refuge from them. Surely thou, too, art conscious of this World Catastrophe — the cruel slaughter of innocent children — men and women's hearts failing them for fear. It is all so helpless — canst thou not perceive that great dangers, and even death await us?
S PIRIT OF Love : O Yearning One, I can indeed, and I have known all thro' the Ages that many wise ones have foretold the coming this coming of this day.
Yearning O NE : And why have mortals failed to listen to these age-old warnings?
S PIRIT OF Love : Because their desire for World Control, greed and gain at any cost, have dwarfed their best impulses and robbed them of the joy of Brotherhood.
Yearning O NE : Spirit of Love, if this be true, when shall this bitter struggle cease [?] If the prophecy of Ages has failed to enlighten them, what power can restrain them?
S PIRIT OF Love : The awakened power of love within everyman's soul, which is divine in its source and will bring forth everlasting peace.
Yearning O NE : But what of all the suffering and blood-shed? What part do they play in the coming of peace?
S PIRIT OF Love : These are the death-throes of an old order of Life. Man is slowly but surely becoming surfeited with the uselessness of human warfare. Already he is beginning to yearn for a New Order of living when only love will flow from Man to Brother-Man.
Yearning O NE : Tell me, O Spirit of Love, hast thou a clear vision of the time that is to be?
S PIRIT OF Love : I have, O Yearning One. Man will yet experience the rich value of unified purpose, rare attainments in Art and Industry, and, best of all, a deep, inner peace, when each shall be for all and all for each.
Yearning O NE : Dear Spirit of Love, thou hast inspired me. The shadows are lifting, and the Desert of Desire glows with the radiant light of hope. I can now move forward, undisturbed by fear and dismay.
S PIRIT OF Love : Come then, and together we shall keep this fadeless vision of the World that is to be.
EXIT
(Most gladly will I go with thee, for now I know that Love can never fail.)
