Classic Poem

And when they came together in one place,
Then shocked the spears and bucklers and the strength
Of armèd warriors; then the bossy shields
Ground each on each, and huge uproar arose;
And then were heard the vaunts and groans of men
Slaying and being slain, and earth ran blood.
As winter torrents rolling from the hill
And flinging their fierce waters through the clefts
From mighty fountains downward to the gulf
Wherein they dash together; and far away
The shepherd on the mountain hears the sound,
Such the drear roar of battle when they mixt.
