The Bubble

I saw a bubble on the water,
A floating dome diffracting light
Into the colours of the rainbow
Above the stones where waves were white.

I said, Too soon it must be broken
And all its lovely world undone.
To my surprise it rose up rounded,
A sphere of sunlight in the sun.

It may be dancing on the tree tops,
It may be, by a light breeze, fanned
To where bright things cause little wonder:
A meteor in Fairyland.

O wedding of the air and water,
O child of two unstable things,
You just as well reflected sunlight
As if you had immortal wings.

For Time itself may be unstable
And in ourselves the fault may be
Disturbing all the sliding water,
A rock of Immortality.
