Carmen 109: On Formianus

That lustful Formian's wealth is great,
And that he boasts a large estate,
I freely can allow;
That in fine lawns, and fertile grounds,
Fowl, fish, and cattle, he abounds,
Beyond dispute is true:

In vain—for with an idle hand
The fruits his various lands command
He squanders, and is poor:
We'll call him, therefore, if you will,
Great, wealthy, rich; provided still
It be a name——no more!
