The Chase
The chariot to the horses' flying feet
Heaven's summit mounts, their hot breath making glow
The golden plains that undulate below;
And Earth lies basking in the flaming heat.
In vain the forest's leaves in masses meet:
The Sun, where hazy peaks their glories show,
In shade where silvery fountains laughing flow,
Steals, darts and glints, in victory complete.
'Tis the hour flamboyant when, through brake and brier,
Bounding superb with her Molossians dire
Mid blood and death, with cries of clamor's brood,
Her arrows flying from the tightened string,
With streaming locks, the breathless, conquering,
Distracted Artemis affrights the wood.
