“Bread and the circus,” hoarsely roared,
Before Christ came, the Roman horde;
And pagan Cæsar deemed it wise
To glut its stomach and its eyes.

In this our year of Christian grace
Great Mammon reigns in Cæsar's place.
What is that wail to heaven sped?
Shame of the ages! “Work or bread!”
