Classic Poem

Companions, the comrade, the night time Who watched with you, bear ye in mind;
The rights and the obligations Of service true bear ye in mind.

The sighing and wailing of lovers, In season of joyance with wine,
When the song of the harp and the bell-staff Ye hearken to, bear ye in mind.

What time to the waist of your wishes The hand of your hope ye set,
The time when we cómmuned together And friendship's due bear ye in mind.

When the sheen of the winecup reflected Is seen in the cupbearer's cheek,
Midst singing and dancing, the lovers, Though past from view, bear ye in mind.

Though the cud of chagrin for their sorrow Ye chew not, who cleave to their faith,
The faithless behaviour of Fortune With old and new bear ye in mind.

How swift and fleet-footed soever The steed of your fortune may be,
With the whip-end the waymates, that after Your course ensue, bear ye in mind.

For mercy's sake, ye that in honour's High places dwell, Hafiz and how
His head, save the dust of your threshold, No rest-place knew, bear ye in mind!
