Cotton and Corn

Would you sell your curs'd cottons for food from abroad?
Then, your gain would be national loss!
For land should be priz'd, not because it is land,
But because it belongs to Chandos.
If acres are valued because they are land,
Honest gain will be Buckingham's loss;
For corn should be priz'd, not because it is corn,
But because it is grown by Chandos.
" We should help the poor townsmen, not rob them! " quoth Hume;
A doctrine denied by Chandos;
For see what starv'd scarecrows these artisans are;
Not to rob them were folly and loss.
How rosy and stout are our yeomen and serfs!
How they thrive and grow fat upon loss!
" Who hath, " saith the Scripture, " to him shall be given! "
Which agrees with the law of Chandos.
