Daffodil or King's Spear

A fairy knight went forth to fight,
He a golden helmet wore,
And the spear he shook with might
All in vert was painted o'er.
The battle's done and in the lake
He his burning thirst must slake;
While he quaffs the silver tide
All his armour lays aside.

Now the fairy tribes advance:
Gladsome is their acclamation;
He has freed them with his lance
He must rule the grateful nation;
He as king must rule the realm;
Ne'er resume his magic helm,
Wear instead a jewelled crown,
Sceptre wield and spear lay down.

Memory of that joyous day
Thus hath Flora fair decreed,
Never more must pass away
Those bright arms are fruitful seed.
Thence the daffodil hath sprung
All with yellow helmet's hung;
Thence her verdant leaf doth rear
Image of a fairy spear.
