Defeat

I had thought to bring you all things,
And I bring
Only the banners of my defeat,
Banners that were bright as faith,
Terrible as life,
And full of tumultuous beauty like desire.

They hang dead now,
Dead and silent,
Their gold tarnished and their crimson rust.

See how they shake a little dust from out their folds!
