Classic Poem

Fair rise the morn that gave to stanhope birth
May zephyres roseat wing perfume the air
May fostering dews descend to cheer the earth
And plenty crown the labour of the year. —
Say can the humble efforts of a muse
Unskill'd in elegance and arts refin'd
From simple natures store a garland chuse
A garland Suited to thy polish'd mind
The gratulating lay to thee is vain
On life prolong'd unworthy thy desires —
Tho thousands Join with Joy the votive strain —
Yet usefulness alone thy heart requires. —
Thy active mind, thy energy of thought —
Can snatch from time, and lengthen months to years —
While mild instruction by fair knowlege brought
Improve our minds, and charm our listening ears
Thus may thy days to latest time descend
Communicating good to all around
Blest as a Husband father brother friend ,
And thy last hour with faith and patience Crown'd.
