She came from a sea-port
From a cold coast,
Of all the things she ever knew,
She loved the sea most.
She sought a city
Far overland,
Wherever she went in it
She walked a sea-strand.
Then men heard it roaring
In their deep lane,
Long they had needed her
To make them hear again.
With her eyes like a wave,
And her hands like a shell,
Over all hearts and mine
She wove a sea-spell.
She that was sea-born,
With thoughts like the sea,
Her wild, brief beauty
Broke over me.
Since she vanished, like a wave,
From the city's coast,
I wander, restless
For what I love most.
From a cold coast,
Of all the things she ever knew,
She loved the sea most.
She sought a city
Far overland,
Wherever she went in it
She walked a sea-strand.
Then men heard it roaring
In their deep lane,
Long they had needed her
To make them hear again.
With her eyes like a wave,
And her hands like a shell,
Over all hearts and mine
She wove a sea-spell.
She that was sea-born,
With thoughts like the sea,
Her wild, brief beauty
Broke over me.
Since she vanished, like a wave,
From the city's coast,
I wander, restless
For what I love most.
