Echoes

Confused murmur of the sonorous heart,
rilling waters of the full spirit,
pacified, in the dark, apart;

air throbbing within the flute,
gentle tremor responding to the player,
flowing in the Jumna like time;

words fly and strike the sitar,
strings sound back in answer —
strange touch and strange effect!

What slumbering vibration
can the world contrive to strike
so it will echo back
