Epilogue to the Same Entertainment
Spoken by a Little Boy
Ladies,...
The happy time of peace draws near,
Europe no more the yoke of war shall wear;
Great Anna will a lasting peace obtain,
To crown the wonders of her glorious reign.
Then, O ye pensive fair, lament no more,
Your lovers soon will gain the British shore;
They'll leave the fields of war for peaceful plains,
Proud to be call'd your ever constant swains;
To you they will resign their glitt'ring arms,
As the just trappings of your conquering charms,
But,... as you tender my advice ... be kind,
And let your heroes no resistance find,
Lest they, enrag'd to see you cruel prove,
Should wage a war instead of making love.
Ev'n I myself will arm in such a cause,
And make you yield to Cupid's pow'rful laws;
I'll head the men of courage, wit, and parts,
And then, disdainful nymphs, have at your hearts.
But if you'll strictly follow my advice,
You all shall have good husbands in a trice.
Let virtue be your guide in all your ways,
'Tis virtue gains alone esteem and praise;
Vice may awhile ensnare a worthless heart,
But virtue gains without the help of art;
And she whom virtue's sacred laws inspire
Shall still enjoy whate'er she can desire.
