Except wine from our mind the thought Of the heart's care shall carry,
The fear of Fortune's shifts the base From our affair shall carry.
Except in drunkenness's sea Reason let down the anchor,
Our life o'er this abyss of woes What bark is there shall carry?
Alack, that heaven, traitor-wise, With every mortal juggleth!
The vict'ry off from yonder knave There's none soe'er shall carry.
My sick soul turneth to the meads; Belike the blight of sorrow
Therefrom the East Wind, with its soft And languorous air, shall carry.
The way in darkness is: but where's A Khizr, who shall guide us?
God grant the fire of sev'rance off Our water ne'er shall carry!
I am Love's leach: drink wine; for this Electuary easance
Shall bring and from the soul the thought Of love-despair shall carry.
Hafiz consumeth and his case None to the Loved One telleth;
Haply, the breeze, 'fore God, his tale Unto the fair shall carry.
The fear of Fortune's shifts the base From our affair shall carry.
Except in drunkenness's sea Reason let down the anchor,
Our life o'er this abyss of woes What bark is there shall carry?
Alack, that heaven, traitor-wise, With every mortal juggleth!
