Fair Florella; or, The Jealous Lover

1.

Down in a lonesome valley
Where the modest violets bloom,
There's where my sweetheart Ella
Lies mouldering in the tomb.

2.

One eve when the moon was shining
And the stars were shining too,
A-lightly to her cottage
The jealous lover flew.

3.

Saying, " Come my love, let's wander
In these wild woods so gay.
While wandering there we'll ponder
And name our wedding day. "

4.

" Oh, the night is growing dreary
And I'm afraid to stay,
For I am growing weary
I would like to retrace my way. "

5.

" Retrace your way, no never!
From me you cannot flee
So bid farewell forever
Fair Ella, you must die! "

6.

Down on her knees before him
She pleaded for her life,
" What have I done, dear Henry,
That you should take my life?

7.

" You know that I've always been faithful
And would have been your wife. "
But deep into her bosom
He plunged the fatal knife.

8.

" Oh Henry, I'll forgive you, "
Were her last dying words
" I never have deceived you. "
And she closed her eyes in death.

9.

The birds sang in the morning
So solemn was the sound.
A stranger found her body
On the cold and silent ground.

10.

Come all young men and maidens
And warning here take heed,
Don't put your trust in young men
Or you astray they may lead.
