Farewell

You came into a lonely life
O'ercharged with stress and strain,
And restless moods that rob and rife
The heart of all its gain.

You gave my fainting spirit drink,
And veered my thoughts to where
Fair sylvan pathways reach and link
With cheerless roadways bare.

And then you left — you left! Ah well!
The dree that o'er my spirt fell
I may not tell, I may not tell —
As Heaven hears I loved thee well.
My gentle friend farewell, — Farewell!
