The First Mothers
Where are they now, the sweet ones, the victorious —
They who have softened the veld with their slenderness —
They the first mothers of others as glorious —
Wise with wide suffering born of their tenderness?
By the hard trails and the shafts and the laagers they tarried;
(Quiet they lay,) and the wagon turned onwards and left them.
Gladly they stayed in the hope that the hearts of them carried,
Seeking their dead where the gods of the wild had bereft them.
