To a Friend
Do not say that your faith in me is immutable.
Do not pour your heart out on me, only to soil me with what you think I am.
Do not crown me king of your qualifications.
Do not prate about mutual understanding.
Do not even mention eternal friendship.
Do not disturb me.
I am striving to hear each cry of the swallows
now swooping through the doorway of the barn.
I am striving to hear each whine of the autumn winds
now sidling about the mangers and the eaves.
I long to tell you that a knowledge of what I am, with the knowledge coming from me,
might cause you to shudder——
might make you speechless.
I long to say that not a few of the things which I have done at will in the past,
or would readily do in the future,
are to such as you abhorrent——
but that I am rather proud of possessing desire with few limitations.
I wonder if I could silence you by telling you the truth?
Do not pour your heart out on me, only to soil me with what you think I am.
Do not crown me king of your qualifications.
Do not prate about mutual understanding.
Do not even mention eternal friendship.
Do not disturb me.
I am striving to hear each cry of the swallows
now swooping through the doorway of the barn.
I am striving to hear each whine of the autumn winds
now sidling about the mangers and the eaves.
I long to tell you that a knowledge of what I am, with the knowledge coming from me,
