To a Friend Who Had Persuaded Emelia to Marry, an Ode
When in thy breast the virtues all reside
On that alone my languid heart relies
Friendship has long each softer wish supplied
And no emotions but for her arise
No hymeneal graces wait for me
The powers of elegance and wit do tarry
The loves and graces wait alone for thee
To me a lonely Couch — for I shall never marry
But Silvan Nymphs and Dryads haunt my bowers
And fairies dance upon the close shorn green
And shadowy elves collect the sweetest flowers
To add new beauties to the rural scene
The green is shorn these bowers are deck'd for you
And fancy raises in the whispering gale
Spirits of nature opening to the view
All that the sight can charm — or sense regale
Then come my friend and with me sacrifice
At friendships fane we'll seek a tranquil rest
My pensive heart on thine alone relies
And seeks no other refuge to be blest.
