The Good Hour

The man who met a phalanx with their spears
And gave his life in one sharp sacrifice,
Knew nothing of the agony of years,
Or what man can endure before he dies.

Some men die early and are spared much care,
Some suddenly, escaping worse than death;
But he is fortunate who happens where
He can exult and die in the same breath.
