Address'd to Mr. WILLIAM JACKSON, of Exeter, upon hearing the L YCIDAS of M ILTON perform'd ( under his Direction, and the Music of his own composing ) at G YDE 's Room in Bath , Thursday, Nov. 26, 1767, ( wrote the same Night .)
What! though unknown , my grateful Muse,
Disdaining mean punctilio Views,
Thus early, and thus warmly too,
Hails H ANDEL 's Fire reviv'd in Y OU .
J ACKSON , go on; Peace to your Fears!
No more address base Roast-Beef Ears ;
Too nobly great for sing-song Days,
Thy Genius soars 'bove vulgar Praise .
Gods! with what Pleasure, what Delight,
I view'd the Circle, passing bright;
What Soul sprung Extacy of Joy
Spoke in each Face ā no black Alloy;
'Twas Rapture all! Strains so divine,
" A nervous Soul in ev'ry Line. "
Nor must unnotic'd pass along
The L INLEY 's sweetly pleasing Throng:
Hark how the little P INTO 's Notes
Regale the Ear; how pleasing floats
Her Melody of Voice; ā such Ease,
Such Elegance of Art must please:
G ERDINI 's thrilling Sounds I hear;
The Brother's Solo charms the Ear;
The Father, too ā his noble Strain,
My Muse enrolls in List of Fame.
