On Himself

Weicht zacht gemeine herren geuze zein
(I think it sums up all my views of life)
But what's my view?—that flowers are very fair
And figures in the ledger very dull
But figures somehow just as good as flowers
But somehow not so nice . . . and God made all . . .
And that's near all my mind is equal to
After a day of Parent's National.
This Chesterton—he wrote to me again,
Man (like a torture) long—and lingering—
A friend of ours at home—you know him too?
—O yes—there's good in everyone. No doubt.
