Wherefore should dark events alarm
Or sharp temptations make us faint?
The strength of an almighty arm
Keeps and defends the weakest saint.

Yet, till this scene of action's clos'd,
And we lay down the shield and sword,
We must oppose and be oppos'd
By those who crucify'd our Lord.

But glorious will our triumph be
When the severe engagement's done,
And we, from sin and sorrow free,
Ascending, shout the conquest won!
