I Would I Were a Nightingale
I.
I would I were a Nightingale,
For thou my rose should'st be,
And ceaseless by the moon-beam pale.
I'd sing my praise of thee.
II.
Oh, what a life of gentle bliss!
How sweet such minstrelsy!
Thy rosy smile, thy fragrant kiss,
My only boons should be!
III.
It is the moon-lit midnight hour
That's consecrate to love;
'Tis then that he asserts his power,
Around, beneath, above!
IV.
Ah! then, were I that tuneful bird,
And thou my favorite flower,
How often should my songs be heard
In that delicious hour.
I would I were a Nightingale,
For thou my rose should'st be,
And ceaseless by the moon-beam pale.
I'd sing my praise of thee.
