Insight

What I know best, I know not why I know:
" Show me the Father, " inwardly I cried;
And one that walked long since by Jordan's side
Said, " Even I the Father's goodness show. "
I doubt it not; but as my way I go,
And ever in his Father's peace abide,
I ponder well the word that he replied,
And ask myself, " If so, why is it so? "
Why if I do not know by deeper sense
Than I can fathom with my plummet-thought,
That God's love must be ever more intense
Than any love that man has ever wrought?
Why it must be, in vain I strive to tell:
I know it is, and know that all is well.
