It is spring
and we walk up the filthysweet
worn wooden stairs
to it, close by the miniature
bright poplar leaves
at a grimy window
wading . . . over the boards
of the second floor . . .
in the clear smile of
the boyish husband
all compassion for
her injury . . . and
such is the
celebrated May
