Io amai sempre, ed amo forta ancora

I ever prized, and prize much more than ever,
And every day must cherish more and more,
The spot oft seen, and without weeping never,
Where my full heart with its deep love ran o'er.
And ever must I bless the day and hour,
That placed me past all low base thoughts' controul
And more than all transcendant beauty's power
Which virtue by example taught my soul.
But how could I have ever dreamt to find
So many dear sweet enemies conspire
To wage a fearful conflict in my mind?
Love! thou consum'st me with so fierce a fire
That were not gentle Hope with thee combined
I should seek Death when Life I most desire!
