Jackrabbits

Jackrabbits are a lanky crew —
No flaccid fat nor blubber.
Four legs they wear, the hinder two
Composed of wire and rubber.

When food gets scarce this western hare
Nibs vitamins from cactus.
To dine upon a prickly pear
Must surely take some practice!

The jack's a timid creature which
Lies low among the grasses,
Too still to even scratch his itch
When a hungry coyote passes.

From such an ambush out he pops
To spook the bronc you straddle,
And by the time the bucking stops
You're short a horse and saddle.

When Mister Jack lets in to lope
He sure gets up and drags it.
It makes him mighty hard to rope —
The way he zigs and zags it.

Long ears like sails upon a mast,
A short tail on his bottom —
They say what makes him flee so fast
Is fleas — because he's got 'em!
