Kites
I saw a small boy to-day
Lift his green and scarlet kite
To the leaping winds.
It darted from the earth
Like a homing bird
And flew lightly and gayly
Into the blue forests of the sky,
Until it slowly disappeared from sight.
And I thought of a dream
I had as a child,
An April-fragrant, rainbow dream,
That rose from the city of iron whirl,
On fleet, invisible wings
Soaring higher and higher,
And vanishing with the stars,
Only to fall at my feet
In later years,
A broken paper toy!
Lift his green and scarlet kite
To the leaping winds.
It darted from the earth
Like a homing bird
And flew lightly and gayly
Into the blue forests of the sky,
Until it slowly disappeared from sight.
And I thought of a dream
I had as a child,
An April-fragrant, rainbow dream,
That rose from the city of iron whirl,
On fleet, invisible wings
Soaring higher and higher,
And vanishing with the stars,
Only to fall at my feet
In later years,
A broken paper toy!
