To a Lady Who Accused the Author of Flattery
WHO ACCUSED THE AUTHOR OF FLATTERY .
While your breast, my sweet maid, is from artifice free,
Why suspect that base vice is adopted by me?
Then attend to the words that I speak from my heart,
'Tis the language of truth unassisted by art:
I never could flatter, for nature's my guide!
I scorn to praise vanity, folly, or pride,
But when sense, and sweet temper to beauty unite,
The soul freely approves the first choice of the sight!
