A Lass O' Smeddum

I hae a bien house in CORSTORPHINE
Weel thackit and ticht as may be.
I'm young and hae favour o' fortune
In gear and a bonny bawbee.
Twa cows in the byre and an aver,
Some sheep and a meal girnel fou;
What needs I wi' love make palaver —
Let men that hae sense come and woo!

II.

I may na be jimp like Jean Elder
Nor white like a curd among whey;
But if I'm no dry as a spelder,
To marry wi' me needna fley.
Nane lichter they name at the dances
For steps that are souple and clean;
Then why should I make the advances —
I 'll bide for a man that has een!

III.

But nane need appear wi' a grey hair,
I'm no for a cuif nor a calf ,
And them that hae mind no to play fair,
I vow they had better haud aff.
I hae a bien house in CORSTORPHINE
Weel thackit and ticht as may be.
I 'm young and hae favour o' fortune,
Yet a man would be welcome to me.
