Little Roy was missing

Little Roy was missing
Where was he found?
A-hangin' by the roadside
Very near the ground.

He was hangin' on a whiteoak
With limbs just o'er his head;
Where he could have saved himself
If he had not been dead.

The rope with which little Roy was hung
Was short and very small;
And the limbs where he should have stood
Had lost no bark at all.

He left on Wednesday evening
Or so his parents say;
Was found on Saturday morning
By Jim Andy Day.

The Coroner was notified,
Likewise the Sheriff, too;
While the people all gathered 'round
And made a great to do.

Because they thought little Roy,
Who was only age ten;
Never could have hung himself,
In the place that he was in.

But they thought he had been murdered,
And afterward placed there;
Oh, poor little Roy,
Things surely do look queer.

When his parents came to see him,
They never shed a tear;
But acted as though the little child
Was not loved very dear.

The Coroner held an inquest,
To find the guilty one;
And it looked as if the parents
Knew who had murdered their son.

For they were rushed to jail
Along with Jim Andy Day,
And until they are proven innocent
There they will have to stay.
