A Long Farewell
A long Farewell! To-night we go
From mists that chill, and gales that blow;
And follow to a stormless clime
The promise of a sunnier prime,
Forth of these shores of northern snow.
And facing that Hesperian glow,—
As Fancy's currents ebb and flow,
They range themselves in halting rhyme,—
A long Farewell.
What thoughts come flooding to-and-fro!—
The balanced beam of Yes and No,—
Passions of earth, and dreams sublime,—
Sorrows,—unhealed till weary Time
Bids Then, and Now, and Long Ago,
A long Farewell.
From mists that chill, and gales that blow;
And follow to a stormless clime
The promise of a sunnier prime,
Forth of these shores of northern snow.
And facing that Hesperian glow,—
As Fancy's currents ebb and flow,
They range themselves in halting rhyme,—
A long Farewell.
What thoughts come flooding to-and-fro!—
The balanced beam of Yes and No,—
Passions of earth, and dreams sublime,—
Sorrows,—unhealed till weary Time
Bids Then, and Now, and Long Ago,
A long Farewell.
