Lunga a l'arte d'Amor, la vita e breve

Life short — the art of Love too long we find —
Dangerous the road — the summit hard to climb —
Our Reason weak and swifter than the wind
The flight of Opportunity and Time .
High-throned the rigid Master sits sublime,
Grasping his scourge on cruel thoughts intent —
Each pupil's fault he tortures like a crime,
Slow in reward — but quick in punishment.
Even his rewards as punishments are meant —
And when he mixes them, his bitter rules
Seem but contrived his scholars to torment
And yet how flourishes this worst of schools!
Dulards are there, with age already bent,
Still striving to become much greater Fools !
