Maccruimein, Piper of Dunvegan, 1746
PIPER OF DUNVEGAN
Fair day, alas! in death is fading,
The shoreless wave, I hear it breaking.
Dark shadows gloom o'er glen and mountain,
And I must go beyond returning.
Farewell, farewell, farewell forever!
The blackness of death surrounds for ever.
No more the bright sun of day returning —
In death no star with hope of morning.
Farewell, farewell! my dreams of beauty;
The vauntings clear of love and battle;
The winds and waves around DUNVEGAN —
The sounds that made my soul awaken.
Farewell, farewell, farewell forever .
The blackness of death surrounds for ever.
No more the bright sun of day returning —
In death no star with hope of morning.
Tho' I must go and swiftly perish,
The dream remains my heart did cherish,
On piobrach wings of light and splendour
My soul set free shall roam for ever.
Farewell, farewell, farewell forever!
The blackness of death surrounds for ever.
No more the bright sun of day returning —
In death no star with hope of morning.
Farewell, farewell! my dreams of beauty;
The vauntings clear of love and battle;
