Man's Ambition

I dig my grave and lie in it,
And as I dig, I show to men
The tombstone that shall o'er me sit,
As I repose within my den.

[A] common grave be then my lot,
My deeds were of no lasting good,
And I shall lie and only rot,
Remembered not by neighbourhood.
