Matsushima in Summertime -

loose elastic fastened by dirty knots to threadbare eyepatches.
puttees slipping down like a mummy's buskins.
they come.
on foot or earthward crutch they come.
they the veterans of the defeat.
they come to admire the pine trees that traditionally for the Japanese represent permanence.
