Translation
By Wang Changling (690?-757?) |
Frontier Song II |
My horse drinks, crossing through autumn water, |
The cold water, and knife-like wind. |
The sun hasn’t sunk yet into desert sand— |
And it’s dark and dreary on approaching the town of Lintao. |
In days of past by the Great Wall there was a battle |
And everyone was high in will and spirit |
But as in all ages, abundant is the dust and sand |
And the white bones mixed among the weeds |
Notes:
1. 5th verse (Xī rì cháng chéng zhàn): in 714, Tang soldiers won a major battle against Tibet. Thousands were killed or injured. Scholars assume that’s the battle Wang referred to.
2. In the history, many poems of this genre, 樂府 (Folk-song-styled-verse), reveal the cruelty of war.
