He heard their voices in the other room;
But could not catch a single word they said:
And yet he knew — ay, well enough, he knew! —
Talking of what they'd do, when he ...
The bed
Was full of lumps: and yet they never came
Even to turn his pillow — and his head,
A burning ache! But they, what did they care —
Talking of what they'd do, when he ...
Like lead

His feet were — just two lumps of ice: stone-cold
The bottle must be now: he'd always said
'Twas useless. And they'd clean forgot his draught —
Talking of what they'd do when he ...
His head
Was queer and light. He couldn't hear them now;
Although he knew — ay, well enough ... The bed
Was falling ... Could it be, the end had come —
Come, while they talked ... and he, already dead!
