To Mr Lewis Pintard on His Retirement at New Rochelle

All hail my friend on whom kind heaven bestows,
A seat of peace a haven of repose,
To chear the evening of a well spent day,
And gilds the shade with hopes immortal ray. —
Blest nature here exerts her finest powers,
To deck these groves she opens all her stores,
I find no place to rest my wondering eyes,
Where e'er I turn new beauties seem to rise. —

There glides the stream, where green hair'd naids lave,
And gently kiss the undulating wave.
The sunbeams play upon its bosom fair,
And Thetis hastes to meet her lover there.

Neptune emerging from his diamond Grot,
Now holds his Court on that enchanting spot,
The ocean Gods by beauteous wood nymphs woo'd,
In shining troops forsake th'translucent flood,

To rove in woodbine shades the chosen seat,
Of Pan and Silvius in the noon day heat. —
Here scenes sublime exeeding fancys power,
Of mountains rocks and gently sloping shore,
Of dark embrowning woods of sunny glades,
Of fruits ambrosial and of verdant meads. —

While blooming roses with the fragrent briar
Mixing their sweets must every heart inspire,
With Joy sincere, and humble gratitude,
To natures parent and the source of good. —

No lassitude or dulness clogs the mind,
Who follows nature with a taste refin'd,
Who seeks her secret haunts, her powers and laws,
Tracing her works to the efficient cause,
Finds treasure vast, unknown to vulgar minds —
And as they contemplate the soul refines —

While ease and leisure every charm renews,
When deeds of other times employ the muse,
This may you prove till latest time shall end,
Blest as a husband father Brother —
