Mutatis Mutandis - Invoice No. 8: A Masque of Admonition

So many sacred Names we take in vain
It's a wonder anyone is left alive.
Only the truly blessed could remain

After such blasphemy. Its blight and stain
Spread through the busy precincts of our hive,
So many sacred Names we take in vain.

How modestly does Christ Himself sustain
Insults as deep as vanity can dive:
Only the truly blessed could remain,

But bound by the cursed sounds uttered by Cain.
When the Gods go, the greater Gods arrive.
So many sacred names we take in vain.

You foul-forked devils lurking in each brain
And bowel so fight and strive to survive,
Only the truly blessed could remain

To hold our breath, to hold off the profane,
To hold our tongue. Pray: one, two, three, four, five. . . .
So many sacred Names we take in vain
Only the truly blessed could remain.
