The Night Express
Who heard a whistle in the night, so far,
Who heard the whistle of the train pass?
—I heard,
Said a hedge-safe bird,
—And I, said the bleached grass.
—I heard, said the sinking star,
—And I, said the apple, nested on the ground,
—And I, the mooned church-tower said,
—And I, the graves around.
—And you, said the roof of the farm overhead
To the child in bed,
You heard the sound.
—I, said the child, asleep almost,
I heard it plain,
I heard the whistle, the whistle of the train,
Like a friend, like a ghost.
Who heard the whistle of the train pass?
—I heard,
Said a hedge-safe bird,
—And I, said the bleached grass.
—I heard, said the sinking star,
—And I, said the apple, nested on the ground,
—And I, the mooned church-tower said,
—And I, the graves around.
—And you, said the roof of the farm overhead
To the child in bed,
You heard the sound.
—I, said the child, asleep almost,
I heard it plain,
I heard the whistle, the whistle of the train,
Like a friend, like a ghost.
