Nun ist es Zeit, Dass Ich Mit Verstand

Nun ist es Zeit, dass ich mit Verstand

Now it is time that I should start
And leave all folly behind me.
As comic actor I've played my part
In a comedy that was assigned me.

The settings were painted brilliant and bold
In the latest romantic fashions;
My knightly mantle was splendid with gold;
I thrilled with the noblest passions.

And now at last I must say good-by
To speeches once distracting . . .
But I am wretched and I sigh
As though I still were acting.

Oh God! unknown I spoke in jest
The things I felt most deeply;
I've acted, with death in my very breast,
The dying hero, cheaply.
