Classic Poem

O fair fall the night when thou camest With many an amorous air!
Coquettish disdain thou usedst And humbly I must it bear.

Nay, how shall its secret hidden Abide for my heart, which hath,
Rose-bud-like, the East wind taken For confidant of its care?

From loftiest fortune my hope is Thy shape in mine arms to clip;
And what from long life I ask is The scent of thy fragrant hair.

What troubles for men did the Tirer Of Fate Forewrit, what time
It blackened thy bold narcissus With coquetry's kohl, prepare!

How oft, of long nights, for yearning, I knocked at the door of the heart,
So haply the day of attainment To thee I might bring anear!

What reck I of thine oppression And what of the spies' despite?
The bondmen of love grudge never For sorrow, how long soe'er.

With news of the rose's coming, Heart's easance the East wind gave:
A thousand blessings of Heaven On such a tale-bearer!

The dust of our heart's affliction The eye of the foe doth blind:
Thy cheek in the dust, o Hafiz, Come, lay and consume and bear!
