Old Friends Met
Ah! yes, while now again we meet,
How glide the happy hours away,
Care-free and sorrowless, in sweet
Remembrance of some early day.
Aye, wake, O early loves, awhile,
And dunt the thoughts of toil and strife.
And come ye mates of early life
With friendship's beaming smile.
Long knew we each the other's care,
And each the other's happier lot,
And bore the weights we had to bear
Without the good our lives had not.
But now let go, as flying chaff,
The thought of sorrow-sadden'd days.
Let grief and sadness go their ways,
And leave the joy and laugh.
Mark not the time, but let it fly,
It flies in joy, it lags in woe;
But while we talk of years gone by
We well may let one evening go.
Or be we sad, or be we gay,
We cannot stay the hour in flight.
And, since 'tis hard to say " Good night,"
Let come, let come the day.
How glide the happy hours away,
Care-free and sorrowless, in sweet
Remembrance of some early day.
Aye, wake, O early loves, awhile,
And dunt the thoughts of toil and strife.
And come ye mates of early life
With friendship's beaming smile.
Long knew we each the other's care,
And each the other's happier lot,
And bore the weights we had to bear
Without the good our lives had not.
But now let go, as flying chaff,
The thought of sorrow-sadden'd days.
Let grief and sadness go their ways,
And leave the joy and laugh.
Mark not the time, but let it fly,
It flies in joy, it lags in woe;
But while we talk of years gone by
We well may let one evening go.
Or be we sad, or be we gay,
We cannot stay the hour in flight.
And, since 'tis hard to say " Good night,"
Let come, let come the day.
