Oh! thou great Spirit, now enthroned in Light,
Here may I muse on thee, with throbbing brain —
How o'er the foam-fleck'd waves of Time thy name
Pealed forth its thunder and its matchless might —
Avenger of the wrong and champion of the right!
Thou heaven-born warrior, here would I remain
Till my frail Spirit catch thy hallowed flame,
And revel in the glow of thy God-Light.
Immortal Field! where thou hast nobly trod,
Freeing the sin-chained slave, mid hostile spears:
Thy quenchless power here thrilled the sin-shook spheres
And ransomed thousands through thee worshipped God!
Fade may thy veteran form in yonder grove,
But in our hearts thy name's embalmed in Love.
